This Door Opens...

well. Maybe often. So I'm reading the intranet site at work and the first thing that catches my eye is:



And the first thought that springs into my head is, "Oh the hell I can't. those friggin things only have like.. what? 2d8 HP?" Oh.. wait. that's Not Quite What I was Thinking.

The most disturbing part is how close I was to the right value...

sigh.

So I heard about interval training and decided to attempt it this weekend, although I first had to get an appropriate timer. I started off trying to get something from amazon, but that would have been slow.. so I spent way too much to get a IronMan watch, only to return it when I figured out my highly useful, cool and completely awesome Garmin 301 already had the countdown timer I wanted.


Anyway as I'd originally heard it, you're supposed to do 10 sec on, 10 off... I thought I'd jump to 20 on/20 off and work on biceps. Friggin ow. I made it through 4 cycles before I couldn't move my arms. and then 6 cycles of situps before getting a cramp so bad I couldn't move. According to Wikipedia, I seem to be doing it wrong. Not sure how much more I'll be trying this.. it seems very painful. Maybe a few more times and if I don't see results... drop it like it's a rock. that's hot.

a somewhat productive weekend. I'm kinda not looking forward to going back to the routine of mowing every weekend, but it'll be good to have a little warmth. I'm sure it'll end up being too much warm, but for now I'm ready for at least a little.

I managed to get some with some pruning, bought some seeds and stuff for gardening, washed the truck, changed oil in the mower, added transmission fluid to the truck, replanted some garlic, dug out a new small garden bed next to the house, added compost (and apparently a bunch of worms... I didn't know I had so many). even got through some movies: the Original 1951 'Alice in Wonderland' was pretty good, it's been years so I'd mostly forgotten. also watched 'Gamer'. which was OK, but mostly forgettable.

Steph introduced me to a fun new Game. It's slightly addictive.

Step 1. Find and read any random news article. The one that amused me today was from NPR.
Step 2. Choose any random hotbutton topic and make a completely unrelated, uninformed comment about the article. Good examples include:

This wouldn't be an issue if concealed carry were (allowed|required|outlawed)
Yet another example of how our abortion laws need to be (strengthened|relaxed|changed|made more difficult|something)
This is all an artifact of (George Bush|Dick Cheney|Ronald Reagan|Bill and Hillary Clinton) and their (Huge Tax Cuts|Association with Haliburton| Domestic Policies|Philandering ways|.... )

Step 3. Send it on to someone else. Mostly it's fun if they're aware of the game... but I could see where it might be even more fun to send it off to people who have no idea.

If I get really bored I may start actually adding these sorts of comments to the articles themselves...

I've been playing with some new distros, looking to find one I really like. Work seems to be set on openSuSE for some reason. I can't really understand why. It seems like a bit of a PITA; and so poorly put together that you can't even logout. Yeah. Really.

Anyway. I've been looking at DistroWatch and the numbers are pretty staggering. hundreds upon hundreds of variants. they're probably all trace roots back to one of 4-5 different bases. so in some ways it's a little like different religions that seem to break over things like 'we cross ourselves holding out three fingers not two, you infidel! we'll lock you in a building and set it afire.'

Anyway, The current best contender (I think) is Scientific Linux. Sure, it takes 2 dvds to get all the stuff you can install, so it's kinda bloatware. but it's based on RedHat... which is kinda good. sorta. I'm still pissed off about the Fedora split thing. if things go well, I may have to switch up for home use. and there should be all sorts of fun little toys in the base image.

I think my original thesis was that there are far too many versions out there and it just serves to muddy the waters and make everything harder to deal with. somehow this ended up just being a big link farm kinda page, I guess.

Remember back in the day when Family Guy was funny? well. I kinda sorta do. But then again, I'm quite old. I'd be less annoyed with this crappy show if just one of the tv stations I regularly watch would ease up on it. but with 4 episodes or so every night on TBS and 2 every night on Adult Swim, I'm pretty much covered in this stupid political stunt with a thin veneer of not very good comedy.

And while I'm on it, just how in the sweaty depths of hell did Seth MacFarlane end up with like.. 8 animated shows, anyway? That may be the most compelling evidence that there is no God; a sane ordered universe with a benevolent architect would never allow such a thing to happen.

So there was a time... when egg salad was not only something I wouldn't eat, but I'd likely throw you to the ground and kick you in the head if you tried to make me eat it. For some reason, I've now had no less than 4 (sandwitches) in the past 2 days. Maybe I don't like the stuff that others throw in, but if not and my tastes have just changed... what else is going to change? and what has changed that I haven't noticed? hrm.

I don't much care for being sick.. but I think I life ear infections much, much less. I never really got them as a kid, so I'm not used to it. and somehow the constant, annoying pain and loss of hearing & balance affect much much worse that general, normally lung related illness. With a little luck, I'll be finishing this off soon.. and I can get back to a less annoyed stomach; it doesn't seem to like antibiotics.

I'm back. I'm back from hell, you son of a bitch. and you don't look happy to see me.

I don't really remember what that's from. but... anyway. the blog is back. despite the best attempts of novell and suse linux combined. now I just have to jump back onto the cleanup process.

Very amusing commercial this morning... some sort of ab circle... twister thing. in fact it's the ab circle pro... perhaps I'm too critical... but phrases like these make me want to send them some specific responses:

Uh. Do you even vaguely know what you're talking about? Momentum and gravity are seriously different things.

I think the most telling part of the whole scam is that they won't even tell you how much one costs. is that even vaguely legal? Oh wait. there it is. $230 with shipping. Now there's a completely full sack-o-crazy to start your day.




For my own part... I'm down somewhere between 8 and 10 lbs of the past 2 or so weeks. and I'm paying for it in spades. spades of spades, perhaps. I joined the local YMCA.. and bought the EA Wii Active (and why can't I become an amazon affiliate and link things like this to them? that sucks, maybe I could score some cash outta this blog)... Anyway, it's ... at least somewhat effective. and combined with the gym time. well, I'm a hurtin turkey.
